Recently, Category 4 hurricane Harvey swept through the southern coast of Texas, causing 300,000 households to lose power. However, the magnesium batteries developed by Yao Yanxin, professor of the Department of Electronic Engineering at the University of Houston and Dezhou Center for Superconductivity, bring hope for people to deal with disasters and power cuts. The team's new magnesium battery makes it possible to use cheap and safe energy storage technology. Yao Yan said in an interview with Science and Technology Daily, which was published in the latest issue of Nature News, “The new energy storage technology can be used as a backup energy against hurricanes, and it can also make the grid more stable.†Current energy storage technologies include Super-capacitors, lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries, etc. The power supply and duration of different technologies are also different. The choice of energy storage technology requires comprehensive consideration of geographical location, cost, safety, cycle life, and energy density. Magnesium batteries use magnesium metal as the anode, which has three outstanding advantages compared to lithium-ion batteries: Magnesium is rich in the earth's crust, about 13.9%; the volume specific capacity of magnesium anode is twice that of lithium metal; During the process, the magnesium metal anode does not produce dendrites and therefore has high safety. However, the solid phase diffusion of magnesium ions is very slow, and it is difficult to find a positive electrode embedding material suitable for the storage of magnesium ions. "Finding cathode materials with high specific capacity and operating voltage has become the key to the development of magnesium batteries," Yao Yan said. To address this issue, they have developed a new generation of positive-electrode magnesium battery materials that enable the battery to achieve a mass specific capacity of up to 400 mAh/g, which is four times more efficient than the previous cathode of magnesium batteries. At present, the voltage of the magnesium battery is about 1 volt, and the voltage of the next-generation battery under development can be mentioned as being close to 3 volts. Although the study is still in its early stage and there is no specific timetable for industrialization, it proposes a new research idea and has guiding value for cheap and safe multivalent ion batteries. Yao Yan hopes that magnesium battery technology can provide solutions for energy storage technologies in the event of a disaster. (Reporter Jiang Jing)
