Scientists stare at surfboards to collect oceanographic data

In order to obtain data on marine research, scientists have developed a number of tools, such as robots that probe at depths of 4,000 meters, data-collecting robots floating on the sea and drifting from San Francisco to Australia. However, in the sea near the shore, because the sea is shallow, the tools commonly used by scientists do not necessarily come in handy. In addition, reefs and undercurrents make the surveying environment more complicated. Recently, a non-profit environmentalist, Lost Bird, developed a device that can be mounted on a surfboard. Volunteers can help gather data for research while surfing.

SmartFin

This device, which resembles a fin, is called SmartFin. The built-in chip is equipped with a GPS module and a Bluetooth module. The most critical is a set of motion trackers for collecting wind and wave data. The battery can be removed and charged repeatedly.

There is no control button on the SmartFin, volunteers can install it on the bottom of the surfboard. After you start surfing, SmartFin will automatically start collecting and recording data.

After playing in the waves, the volunteers can synchronize the data through the matching application on the smartphone and upload it to the cloud database. Including time, place, time and seawater conditions, the data collected for each surfing will be saved separately for researchers to use.

At present, SmartFin's team is working with the Scripps Institute in California to study the feasibility of the device as a research aid. After completion, it is not far from being put into commercial use.

If you are gaining a sense of achievement, you will do your best for the study of this earth. Will you fall in love with surfing?
