Application of SolidWorks in the design and manufacture of rolling mill bearing housing

SolidWorks is currently the leading 3D CAD software, known for its powerful and user-friendly design capabilities. This paper uses the bearing housing of a rolling mill roller in the metallurgical industry as a case study to demonstrate several practical applications of SolidWorks. First, solid modeling is achieved through various operations such as extrusion, rotation, cutting, pattern creation, and hole-making. The 3D solid model of the bearing housing is shown in Figure 1, illustrating how complex geometries can be built efficiently using these tools.

Next, before conducting finite element analysis, the bearing housing is prepared by splitting the cylindrical surface of the bearing hole using the "Split Line" command in SolidWorks. This allows the model to be divided into upper and lower halves, as shown in Figure 2. The load is then applied to the lower half of the cylindrical surface to simulate real-world conditions, making it ready for further structural analysis.

SolidWorks also offers robust tools for generating detailed engineering drawings that are fully associative with the 3D model. This means that any changes made to the model automatically update the corresponding drawings, eliminating the need for manual redrawing. This feature significantly reduces design time and improves accuracy, especially when compared to traditional methods using AutoCAD. In addition, SolidWorks allows users to calculate the weight of a 3D solid model. By selecting the "Mass Properties" option and inputting the material density, the weight of the bearing housing was determined to be 1,426.14 kg. This information is crucial for designers aiming to optimize material usage and for manufacturers to provide more accurate cost estimates. Finally, the Toolbox plug-in enhances productivity by offering a comprehensive library of standard parts, including bearings, nuts, screws, pins, and gears. These components can be directly imported into the assembly, eliminating the need to create individual models from scratch. This not only speeds up the design process but also ensures consistency and reliability in the final product. Overall, SolidWorks proves to be an essential tool in modern mechanical design, offering a wide range of functionalities that streamline the entire design and manufacturing workflow.
