Analysis of high-fall accidents is not a major hazard to the safety belt

Accidents caused by falls from high places can be categorized into nine different types, depending on where the fall occurs. These include falling off scaffolding, falling near the entrance of a walkway, falling from a suspended ceiling, falling during roof work, falling while using a ladder, falling from light structures such as asbestos shingles, falls during climbing activities, and other types of falls from elevated locations. To better understand the causes, let's take the case of a fall from scaffolding as an example.

Falls from scaffolding often occur due to a variety of human factors. Workers may play or rest on the scaffolding, which increases the risk of losing balance. Some individuals may lean out too far, step on unstable boards, or exert excessive force while moving. Additionally, not wearing a safety harness properly or failing to secure it at all can significantly increase the danger. Other contributing factors include stepping on "probe boards"—boards that are not fully supported or fixed—leading to sudden collapses.

In terms of equipment and safety measures, issues may arise when fasteners are not properly tightened or do not meet required standards. The absence of safety belts, safety nets, or helmets is another major concern. Even if these items are present, they might have quality defects or be improperly used, reducing their effectiveness in preventing accidents.

Management-related problems also play a key role. For instance, scaffolding boards may be overloaded or not fully laid out, creating unsafe working conditions. Poor design of the scaffolding system can lead to instability. Inadequate safety inspections, lack of proper training, and failure to identify and eliminate potential hazards in a timely manner can all contribute to the risk of falling.

Environmental conditions can further increase the likelihood of such incidents. Wet or snowy weather makes surfaces slippery, increasing the chance of slipping. Strong winds can cause instability for workers at height, while natural disasters like earthquakes can lead to sudden structural failures. All these elements must be considered when assessing the risk of high-altitude falls.
