Two "transfer" and "liter" will create a modern Chinese stone industry
Abstract As a key supporting event of the China Xiamen International Stone Fair, the World Stone Congress has always aimed to promote global exchanges and cooperation within the stone industry. Below is the speech delivered by Zou Chuansheng, President of the China Stone Association, at the 2014 World Stone Congress: I will provide an overview of the World Stone Conference and share insights into the development trends of China’s stone industry.
The World Stone Congress, as a crucial part of the China Xiamen International Stone Fair, plays a vital role in fostering international collaboration and knowledge exchange in the global stone sector. During the 2014 event, Zou Chuansheng emphasized several key trends shaping the Chinese stone industry, including industrial migration, transformation, and upgrading.
First, he outlined the industry's performance in 2013. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics and Customs, the stone industry saw significant growth. Large-scale enterprises produced 66.55 million square meters of stone, representing a 17.1% increase compared to the previous year. This included 19,922 square meters of marble slabs and 465.33 million square meters of granite slabs. Sales revenue reached 347.7 billion yuan, up 21.6%, while total imports and exports of stone amounted to 42.38 million tons, with imports rising to 14.97 million tons and exports reaching 27.42 million tons—an increase of 13.9%.
Zou then discussed the first major trend: **industry transfer**. This involves shifting both resource development and logistics processing bases. The resource development has moved from eastern provinces like Shandong and Fujian to central and western regions such as Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Hubei, Hunan, Henan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Jiangxi. Similarly, logistics and processing centers have relocated from the east (Fujian) and south (Guangdong) to the west (Hubei, Sichuan) and north (Changjiang Estuary, Bohai Rim).
Next, he highlighted **industrial transformation**, noting that the industry is transitioning from being a supplier of raw materials to becoming a provider of standardized, high-quality stone products. This shift requires companies to evolve from simple material suppliers to innovative solution providers. He proposed a roadmap for transformation, including market environment creation, product standardization, network expansion, and brand building.
Finally, Zou addressed **industrial upgrading**, emphasizing improvements in mining, processing, and environmental protection technologies. Upgrades in mine management, equipment, and operational standards are essential. Processing lines need modernization to enhance quality and efficiency. Environmental protection measures and management systems must also be strengthened.
Through these two "transfers" and one "upgrade," the Chinese stone industry is moving toward a more sustainable, efficient, and globally competitive model. The 2014 World Stone Congress served as a pivotal platform for sharing these insights and inspiring future developments in the sector.
