Two "transfer" and "liter" will create a modern Chinese stone industry
Abstract As a key supporting event of the China Xiamen International Stone Fair, the World Stone Congress has long been dedicated to promoting global exchanges and cooperation within the stone industry. Below is the speech delivered by Zou Chuansheng, President of the China Stone Association, at the 2014 World Stone Congress: I would like to introduce you to the World Stone Conference.
As a key supporting activity of the China Xiamen International Stone Fair, the World Stone Congress has played a vital role in fostering international collaboration within the global stone industry. In his speech at the 2014 World Stone Congress, Zou Chuansheng, President of the China Stone Association, highlighted the development trends of China’s stone industry, emphasizing three key areas: industrial transfer, transformation, and upgrading.
He began by presenting an overview of the industry in 2013. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics and Customs, the stone industry in China saw significant growth. Above-scale enterprises produced 66.55 million square meters of stone in 2013, a 17.1% increase compared to the previous year. This included 19,922 square meters of marble slabs and 465.33 million square meters of granite slabs. The industry also achieved a sales revenue of 347.7 billion yuan, reflecting a 21.6% rise. In terms of trade, the total import and export volume reached 42.38 million tons, with imports increasing by 9.7% to 14.97 million tons and exports rising by 13.9% to 27.42 million tons.
The first major point discussed was **industrial transfer**, which involves two main shifts. First, the **resource development base** is moving from the eastern regions—such as Shandong and Fujian—to the central and western provinces, including Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Hubei, Hunan, Henan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Jiangxi. Second, the **logistics and processing base** is shifting from the east (Fujian) and south (Guangdong) to the west (Hubei, Sichuan) and north (Changjiang Estuary, Bohai Rim).
Next, **industrial transformation** was emphasized. Zou pointed out that many stone enterprises are still positioned as material suppliers rather than value-added service providers. However, with the market shifting from investment and export-driven to consumer-driven, there is a growing need for these companies to evolve into standardized product suppliers. He outlined a transformation strategy: creating a favorable market environment, standardizing products, building a strong marketing network, and developing a solid brand strategy.
Finally, **industrial upgrading** was addressed. This includes upgrading mine mining technology through improved management and equipment, re-engineering production lines to enhance processing quality, and improving environmental protection and efficiency through advanced technology and stricter standards.
Through these efforts—two transfers and one upgrade—the Chinese stone industry aims to become more modern, sustainable, and competitive on the global stage. The 2014 World Stone Congress served as a pivotal platform for discussing these critical developments.
