How metal halide lamps work

Metal halide lamps are an advanced type of light source that evolved from high-pressure mercury lamps, designed to enhance the color quality of the emitted light. These lamps not only offer excellent color rendering but also provide high luminous efficiency. To achieve this, various metal halides are added into the lamp. Through a continuous cycle, the metal vapor is supplied to the arc, and the metal atoms become excited within the arc chamber, emitting characteristic spectral lines. By carefully selecting the types and ratios of these metal halides, it's possible to create lamps with different color temperatures and light characteristics. It's important to note that metal halide lamps emit ultraviolet light, so they must be installed according to strict safety standards.

In contrast, iodine-tungsten lamps are a different type of incandescent lamp that contains iodine inside the glass tube. The presence of iodine allows for a chemical reaction with the tungsten filament, which helps raise the filament's temperature and improves light output. This results in brighter and more efficient lighting compared to standard incandescent bulbs. Unlike metal halide lamps, iodine-tungsten lamps do not require ballasts and have a much shorter start-up time, making them more suitable for applications where quick ignition is necessary.

Metal halide lamps typically require higher operating voltages and must be used with compatible ballasts. Without the right ballast, their lifespan can be significantly reduced. Additionally, metal halide lamps take longer to warm up before reaching full brightness, which makes them unsuitable for environments requiring instant lighting. On the other hand, iodine-tungsten lamps are ideal for applications such as UV ink and paint curing, dry film and wet film processing, green solder mask exposure, screen printing color curing, and especially for drying thick layers or white and black coatings, where they deliver exceptional performance and results.
