Identification method of porcelain in Chenghua period

The Identification of Chenghua Porcelain:

Chenghua porcelain, produced during the reign of the Chenghua Emperor (1465–1487), is renowned for its delicate craftsmanship and refined aesthetic. One of the key characteristics is the shape of the pieces—often small and elegantly rounded, with a graceful appearance. It is commonly said that “there are no large pieces in Chenghua,” although this is not an absolute rule, as some larger items do exist.

The porcelain body is made from fine, pure clay, resulting in a thin, light, and translucent quality. When held up to the light, it often appears white or slightly pinkish, resembling fresh milk in smoothness and softness. The glaze is thick, glossy, and smooth, adding to the overall elegance of the piece.

Chenghua blue-and-white porcelain is known for its subtle and calm color palette. However, due to the thick application of cobalt pigment, the blue can sometimes appear muted, almost as if it's veiled by a soft mist. This effect is especially noticeable on the bottom of the pieces, where the blue tends to be denser, similar to the later Xuande period, but still coexists with lighter tones.

One of the most distinctive innovations of the Chenghua period is doucai (cloisonné) porcelain. The decorative lines are slender and precise, with a double-line technique used to apply color lightly. Only flat shading is employed, without the use of shading or depth. Figures are painted in a single layer, with no undergarments visible, hence the saying “one coat.” Chenghua blue-and-white is celebrated for its elegant and harmonious colors, using a stable “equal green” material instead of the earlier “Sui Mu Bo Qing” technique. The blue often has a slight greenish tint, making it similar to the Hongzhi blue-and-white style.

The glaze of Chenghua porcelain is exceptionally fine and clear, which is why it is often referred to as “clearly see Chenghua, clearly see Yongzheng.” This clarity adds to the overall visual appeal and helps in distinguishing authentic pieces.

The foot of Chenghua porcelain is another important feature for identification. The blue-and-white border is usually very neat and closely follows the base of the piece. The inner circle line is deep and well-defined, making it a reliable indicator for authentication.

Finally, the calligraphy used on Chenghua porcelain is bold and powerful, resembling a strong hand. The standard inscription is “Da Ming Cheng Huan Nian Zhi,” with specific characteristics: the character “Da” has a round and high top, “Cheng” is firm and straight, “Huan” has a balanced structure, and “Zhi” is written without crossing lines. These details help experts identify genuine pieces.
