Imports of forming machine tools in the United States increased sharply in May
In May 2013, the U.S. metalworking machine tool trade saw a mixed performance, according to data released by the American Manufacturing Technology Association. Exports of these tools reached $230 million, marking a 3.6% decline compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, imports rose to $480 million, an increase of 2.6% from April. This led to a widening trade deficit of 9.0% in the same period.
The data also highlighted specific trends across different categories of machinery. Gold cutting machine tool exports fell by 15.2%, while imports declined slightly by 0.8%. In contrast, forming machine tool exports increased by 27.9%, and imports rose by 30.5%. CNC machine tool exports dropped by 2.8%, but imports only fell by 0.9%. On the other hand, exports of other manufacturing technologies grew by 8.8%, while imports decreased by 0.8%.
Over the first five months of 2013, the U.S. exported a total of $1.11 billion worth of metalworking machine tools, representing a 9.5% year-on-year increase. However, imports totaled $2.27 billion, showing a 9.5% decrease. Gold cutting machine tool exports rose by 9.5%, while imports fell by the same percentage. Forming machine tool exports declined by 3.4%, but imports grew by 7.6%. CNC machine tool exports climbed by 13.0%, while imports fell by 14.3%. Other manufacturing technology exports increased by 1.0%, but imports rose by 5.3%.
Looking at longer-term trends, since June 2012, demand for CNC machine tools had surpassed that of traditional metalworking machines. However, starting in November, the demand for CNC tools dipped below that of metalworking machines. From September onward, the import demand for other manufacturing technologies remained relatively high. Since December, this category has consistently outperformed both metalworking and CNC machine tool imports for five consecutive months.
