Reasonable calculation method for floor and tile usage

If you're a property owner or someone involved in home renovation, you might have wondered how to keep your renovation costs under control. The key lies in smart material management and careful planning. One of the most effective ways to save money is by accurately estimating the amount of materials needed—this not only helps reduce waste but also keeps your budget on track. For instance, when my landlord and I renovated our units at the same time, we used the same materials, yet I ended up saving significantly on building costs. Why? Because my landlord calculated the quantities precisely, maximizing the use of each item. Let’s take floor tiling as an example. Suppose you have a room that measures 3.6 meters in length and 3.3 meters in width, and you’re using tiles that are 90 cm long and 9 cm wide. Here's how you can calculate the number of tiles required: 1. **Determine the direction of the tiles** – Lay them along the 3.6m side (longitudinal direction). Number of tiles in this direction = 3.6 / 0.9 = 4 tiles. 2. **Calculate the number of rows** – Divide 3.3m by 0.09m (tile width). Number of rows = 3.3 / 0.09 ≈ 36.67 → round up to 37 rows. 3. **Total number of tiles** = 4 × 37 = 148 tiles. 4. **Total area required** = 148 × 0.9 × 0.09 = 11.988 m². 5. **Material cost** – Assuming the tile price is 150 yuan per square meter: Total cost = 11.988 × 150 = 1,798.20 yuan. 6. **Estimate loss and loss rate** – Loss area = 11.988 - (3.6 × 3.3) = 0.18 m². Adding extra for potential errors and cuts: Total loss = 0.108 + (4 × 0.9 × 0.09) = 0.432 m². Loss rate = 0.432 / (3.6 × 3.3) ≈ 3.6%. This shows that with proper planning, the loss from tiling rarely exceeds 5%, which is very useful for controlling overall project costs. For floor joists, a simple rule of thumb applies. If you’re using 3cm x 5cm wood spaced every 30cm, the amount of wood needed per square meter is less than 0.01 m³ (including some waste, it’s about 0.006 m³). So, for a 10 m² room, you’ll need more than 0.1 m³ of wood. At a price of 830 yuan per cubic meter, the cost per square meter is less than 8.30 yuan. Adding other materials, the total cost per square meter is around 10 yuan. This method works well in Shanghai, and in other areas, you can estimate 0.01 m³ of wood per square meter. When it comes to floor tiles, especially in kitchens and bathrooms where full coverage isn’t always necessary, accurate estimation is crucial. A good approach is to draw a 1:10 scale layout of the space, mark where each tile will go, and count the pieces. This helps you see exactly how many tiles you need, and which ones will be cut. If a piece is less than half, you can combine two to make one whole. This way, you can visualize the final layout before starting the work, reducing waste and improving accuracy in your budget.
