Recently, there has been a growing concern among consumers about the quality of furniture they purchase. Reports indicate that many people are falling victim to misleading practices, such as rubber wood being sold as oak or custom-made solid wood cabinets actually made from MDF. These issues have led to an increase in complaints and disputes over furniture purchases.

Solid Wood Furniture

Low-Quality Wood Pretending to Be Premium

In early February, Mr. Li purchased a set of solid wood cabinets for 10,000 yuan. Upon installation, he discovered that three panels were made of high-density board, and two cabinet doors did not meet the original specifications. After negotiations, the company agreed to replace the materials and redo the doors. Similarly, Ms. Wang spent over 4,000 yuan on a table advertised as solid wood, only to find out later that it wasn’t pure solid wood. Other consumers reported similar experiences, where products labeled as high-grade wood were actually lower-quality wood, such as black rosewood mistaken for teak or rubber wood passed off as oak.

Ongoing Disputes Over Solid Wood Furniture

During a recent visit to a large home store, reporters interviewed dozens of consumers, with nearly 80% stating they prefer solid wood furniture due to its eco-friendliness, durability, and aesthetic appeal. However, over 70% admitted they know very little about the differences between types of wood, often relying on merchant descriptions or pricing to make their decisions. Many consumers are unsure of the distinctions between oak, eucalyptus, or other wood types, and simply rely on visual judgment.

At a shopping mall, reporter met Mr. Wang, who recently bought a set of walnut furniture. He said he visited multiple stores before making the purchase, but still had doubts about the seller’s claims. To be safe, he asked the merchant to clearly state the material as “100% walnut” on the invoice.

According to the Consumer Association, since 2012, there have been 238 complaints related to furniture, accounting for 13.8% of all consumer complaints during the same period. Common issues include poor quality, unfulfilled after-sales service, and mismatched product descriptions. Some custom-made solid wood cabinets were found to be made of MDF, while others were falsely labeled as solid wood when they were actually veneer furniture.

Know the Materials Before Signing a Contract

The national standard "General Technical Conditions for Wood Furniture," implemented in May 2009, categorizes solid wood furniture into three types: fully solid wood, solid wood furniture, and solid wood veneer furniture. Fully solid wood means the entire piece is made of solid wood, while solid wood furniture uses solid wood for the surface but may have other materials underneath. Solid wood veneer furniture uses thin layers of real wood over a different substrate, such as particleboard or MDF.

Industry experts note that the price of solid wood furniture can vary greatly depending on the type of wood and production process. For example, the price difference between different types of teak can be up to ten times. While fully solid wood furniture is considered more environmentally friendly, the other types often use adhesives during manufacturing. Teak, known for its durability and resistance to moisture, is often imitated by cheaper woods like black rosewood. Oak is popular for its strong appearance, but some manufacturers pass off rubber wood as oak to cut costs.

Experts advise consumers to ask about the materials used when purchasing furniture and to ensure that the contract clearly states the type of wood, such as whether it's fully solid wood, veneer, or composite. This helps avoid future disputes and ensures transparency in the transaction.

Tips for Choosing Solid Wood Furniture

The Consumer Association recommends paying attention to six key points when buying solid wood furniture:

1. Observe the grain: Real solid wood furniture usually has natural, irregular grain patterns. If the grain is symmetrical and too perfect, it might not be genuine.

2. Smell the wood: Genuine solid wood has a natural, mild scent without strong chemical odors.

3. Check for natural defects: Look for knots, scars, and imperfections. If one side has a knot and the other doesn't match, it may not be solid wood.

4. Examine the inner structure: Remove hardware like hinges or handles to check if the core is made of solid wood.

5. Assess the craftsmanship: Solid wood furniture typically shows the natural texture of the wood, while panel-based furniture often uses hidden joints or metal connectors.

6. Consider the design: If the furniture looks overly ornate or complex, it might not be made of solid wood.
