Cold storage leaks ammonia school to students to wear masks
A few days ago, an unusual pungent odor suddenly spread near Dunhuang Road in Shahekou District of Dalian City. The strange smell caused three nearby primary schools to cancel outdoor activities that morning as a precaution.
The following day, the reporter visited the area and found that the odor had significantly weakened, but a lingering sharp scent remained in the air. Ms. Wang, a local resident, shared her experience: “I woke up in the morning and immediately noticed this strange smell. It made me feel uncomfortable and hard to breathe.†Other residents mentioned that the smell had been present for two or three days, though it wasn’t as strong on the first couple of days. It became more noticeable yesterday.
According to reports, three primary schools—Xinxing Elementary School, Huabei Road Elementary School, and Shengli Primary School—temporarily suspended outdoor activities. One school even rushed to purchase masks and distributed them to students to ensure their safety. A teacher from Victory Elementary School noted, “Around the playground, many children were crying due to the irritation.â€
The environmental protection department of Shahekou District quickly arrived at the scene to investigate. Initial tests suggested a chemical similar to ammonia, but no clear source was identified at first.
On the following day, the department continued its search by visiting over 10 nearby businesses. Based on information provided by local residents, they finally traced the source to a small civilian cold storage facility located near North China Road and Shugang Road. A minor ammonia leak was detected, and the staff promptly repaired the issue. As a result, the facility has been temporarily shut down, and authorities are conducting further investigations into the incident.
The environmental protection department reminded the public that in case of an ammonia leak, immediate evacuation is essential. They advised people to move upwind and stay at least 50 meters away from the source. When escaping, covering the mouth with a wet towel is recommended to reduce inhalation of harmful fumes.
This incident has raised concerns among local residents, who hope for more transparency and long-term solutions to prevent such occurrences in the future.
