Demystifying the most ignorant feng shui misunderstanding

During the renovation process, many people tend to consider some Feng Shui principles, even if they are not experts. Most of us only understand part of it, while the rest remains unclear. We might overlook small details that can actually affect the energy flow in your home, turning your hard work into something fleeting or even bringing negative energy. Experts have pointed out five common Feng Shui mistakes that should be avoided. **Avoid Changing Rooms Too Easily** If you’ve already bought a house and aren’t fully satisfied, it’s best not to change it. For example, doors shouldn’t be directly aligned with each other, as this can create obstacles. Traditional Beijing courtyard houses were designed with this in mind. There should usually be a buffer zone at the entrance, and the direction of the entrance should move clockwise. If you're unhappy with the layout, you can adjust it through smart interior design to compensate for any shortcomings. The kitchen is where the family gathers around the fire, and it's also where food is prepared—essentially the source of sustenance and wealth. Therefore, the kitchen plays an important role in attracting prosperity. A burnt meal is like burning money, so it's essential to maintain a clean and positive environment in the kitchen. Ancient homes often had separate kitchens, which were not adjacent to the bedroom. Today, with open layouts, we should still be mindful of the placement of the kitchen. The door shouldn't face the stove directly, as this can cause instability in the fire, affecting both cooking and luck. It can also lead to safety issues like sparks or fires. **Incorrect Placement of Decorations** A Longquan sword is believed to ward off negative energy, but it should only be placed in the study or office area. Never put it in the bedroom or living room. Bagua mirrors should not be swayed; if you need to use one, choose a convex mirror. If there's a bank across from your home, a concave mirror can help attract wealth. **Landscape Art Considerations** When hanging large landscape paintings, pay attention to the content. Waterfalls should be accompanied by a water pool, symbolizing the retention of wealth. Without it, the waterfall may wash away your family’s fortune. It's safer to avoid such artwork altogether. If you do hang a boat painting, make sure the bow faces inward—otherwise, it may represent a loss of money. **Bamboo Forests and Trees** Bamboo enclosures should not block the front of the house. The entrance must remain open to allow good energy to flow in. Trees should not cover the door, as this is considered “the top of the heart,” which can bring bad luck. Ideally, trees should be planted on the left side of the house, known as the Qinglong (Green Dragon) side. Their roots should not enter the house, and branches should not extend toward windows, as this can cause health issues. Avoid planting trees too close to the house, as this can trap negative energy. Also, avoid tall trees that block sunlight, as they can negatively impact the home’s energy. **Understanding Primary and Secondary Spaces** Some people mistakenly believe that the largest room should be the master bedroom. However, good Feng Shui requires distinguishing between primary and secondary spaces. Choose the room with the best layout, natural light, and ventilation. Sometimes, a smaller room can be more beneficial than a larger one, depending on its function and orientation. Don’t assume that the biggest room is automatically the best.
