Electronic Transformer Overview

Whether it's a DC or AC power source, electronic transformers—made with soft magnetic cores—are essential components in modern power systems. These devices play a crucial role in energy conversion, signal transmission, and system protection across various applications. Electronic transformers are one of the four key components in power supply units, alongside semiconductor switches, rectifiers, and capacitors. Depending on their function within the power system, they can be categorized into several types: 1) Power transformers, rectifier transformers, inverter transformers, and switching transformers are used for voltage and power conversion. 2) Broadband, audio, and mid-frequency transformers are designed to transmit signals and power efficiently. 3) Pulse transformers are used for transmitting pulses, driving signals, and triggering operations. 4) Isolation and shielded transformers provide electrical isolation and reduce interference. 5) Phase-changing and phase-shifting transformers adjust the phase of the output. 6) Frequency-multiplied or frequency-divided transformers modify the output frequency. 7) Matching transformers ensure impedance compatibility between the source and load. 8) Voltage and current regulators maintain stable output levels. 9) Filter inductors help smooth out AC and DC signals. 10) EMI and noise suppression inductors minimize electromagnetic interference. 11) Snubber inductors absorb surges and control current changes. 12) Energy storage inductors assist in the commutation of power switches. 13) Magnetic switches and transformer-based switches enable controlled power flow. 14) Controllable and saturable inductors allow dynamic adjustment of inductance. 15) Voltage, current, and pulse transformers are used for measurement and signal transformation, including Hall effect sensors. As shown, electronic transformers are fundamental in both DC and AC power systems, as well as in specialized power supplies. In high-frequency switching power supplies, soft magnetic components are often highlighted, and among them, transformers are the most commonly referenced due to their central role. This is why they are frequently referred to as "electronic transformers" in the context of power electronics. In summary, no matter the type of power supply—whether DC, AC, or specialized—electronic transformers are an indispensable part of the system. Their versatility and efficiency make them vital for modern power conversion and control technologies.
