Soundproof Rock Wool Board
High-density rock wool boards used for partition walls are commonly referred to as "sound-proof rock wool." This material is primarily used for sound insulation in lightweight walls, offering an effective solution for reducing noise transmission.
The typical structure of a lightweight wall using this system includes:
Gypsum board (one or more layers) + keel + rock wool board + gypsum board (one layer or multiple layers)
In this configuration, the rock wool board serves as a sound-absorbing material. It absorbs sound waves that pass through the gypsum board, minimizing the back-and-forth reflection of sound within the cavity formed between the plasterboard, keel, and the rock wool board. This significantly enhances the overall sound insulation performance of the wall.
Studies have shown that when using rock wool boards with a density of 80–150 kg/m³, the sound insulation effect can be improved by 8–15 decibels compared to using a single layer of gypsum board without rock wool.
It's important to note that not all rock wool products on the market are the same. The rock wool used in soundproof walls is specifically designed for acoustic optimization, ensuring better performance and durability.
Density plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of soundproof rock wool. The ideal density for sound insulation in walls is typically between 100–200 kg/m³. This ensures optimal sound absorption while maintaining structural strength. In contrast, most rock wool sold in building supply stores has a density of less than 60 kg/m³, which results in poor sound insulation and a soft texture that can sag over time, losing its effectiveness.
Another key factor is the slag ball content. Unlike generic rock wool, specialized soundproof rock wool is engineered to control the size and distribution of slag balls within the board. These particles help scatter and reflect sound waves, enhancing the sound insulation properties. Low-quality rock wool often has uneven density, leading to gaps that reduce soundproofing performance.
Adhesive usage is also an important consideration. High-quality soundproof rock wool is manufactured with minimal glue, ensuring fire resistance and structural integrity. On the other hand, many low-end products use excessive adhesive, which weakens fire performance and increases the risk of sagging.
Dimensions are another advantage of specialized soundproof rock wool. These boards are manufactured in standard widths such as 800mm, 600mm, and 400mm, making them easy to install without cutting during construction. This reduces dust and irritation for workers, unlike generic rock wool that often needs to be cut on-site.
With optimized design and advanced manufacturing techniques, the special rock wool boards used for soundproof walls can improve the sound insulation of lightweight walls by more than 10 decibels, offering a significant enhancement in acoustic performance.
