Summer fire protection needs to pay attention to the "lifetime" of electrical appliances

In recent weeks, the temperature in Liuzhou has been steadily rising, with the highest reaching 33°C. As a result, household appliances have become a major concern. Several fires reported in Liuzhou during May were linked to electrical issues and aging wiring. This has sparked online discussions after some netizens shared what they call the "Electricity Life Table," sparking widespread interest. A local resident, Mr. Zhang, recently shared his experience while using an induction cooker in a rented apartment. He mentioned that there are several aged appliances in the house, such as a 21-inch TV purchased in 2002. Despite its age, he says it still works well and doesn’t see the need to replace it right away. His attitude reflects a common trend among many residents, especially in older neighborhoods, where people often continue using appliances as long as they function. According to reports from nearby communities, most people only replace their appliances when moving into a new place. Many citizens admitted they rarely check the service life of their devices or pay attention to signs of aging. As long as the appliance is working, they keep using it. Currently, there is no official regulation in China mandating the lifespan of home appliances, and manufacturers typically do not include a "safety use years" label on products like refrigerators, washing machines, or televisions. Online research shows that several fires in Liuzhou this May were caused by faulty appliances. For example, a snack shop on Zhenghe Road caught fire due to a TV overheating after prolonged use. Firefighters in the Liubei district also confirmed that two recent fires were related to electrical appliances. Some netizens have created an “Electricity Life Table” online, categorizing the typical service life of common household appliances. According to this table, most appliances last around 8 years, including color TVs, electric water heaters, air conditioners, and washing machines. Electric irons, rice cookers, and microwaves can last up to 9 years, while refrigerators may last as long as 16 years. However, smaller appliances like desktop computers, hair dryers, and razors have shorter lifespans, ranging from 4 to 6 years. Netizens argue that using outdated appliances can lead to dangerous situations and suggest that old devices should be replaced before they cause accidents. However, this table is mainly focused on traditional household items, and there’s little information on electronic gadgets like tablets or smartphones. Some users say these devices are judged based on how long they function, but there’s no clear standard for their lifespan. Experts agree that while the “Electricity Life Table” isn’t official, it holds some value. Li Zhongfu, a lecturer at Guangxi University of Science and Technology, noted that the average lifespan of most appliances is between 10 and 13 years. However, the actual lifespan can vary depending on usage and quality. He emphasized that aging wiring and overuse during hot weather can increase the risk of fire. If an appliance shows signs of malfunction, it should be turned off immediately and taken to a professional repair shop. As summer continues to bring high temperatures, it's more important than ever to be mindful of the condition of your home appliances and to replace them when necessary.
