Tanker Tilting Pollution Stream Worker Wearing Gas Mask Cleaning
On the afternoon of the 18th, the Hangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau held a press conference to update the public on an incident involving a leaking tanker truck on National Highway 320 in Tonglu. The leak, which occurred during the early hours of the same day, involved tetrachloroethane, a hazardous chemical. According to the latest report, approximately 25.8 tons of the substance were leaked, with 17.8 tons successfully intercepted and absorbed. About 8 tons of the chemical entered nearby streams, located roughly 2 kilometers from the Fuchun River.
The affected area was quickly addressed by emergency response teams. The Fuyang municipal government had initially suspended water supply from the Fuchun River, but it was restored by 3:00 PM on the 18th. Authorities emphasized that no contamination was detected at key monitoring points along the river, including the Nangxi Bridge and the Fuchun River Bridge. Further checks confirmed that the substance had been diverted away from the river's main flow.
The vehicle involved in the incident belongs to Shengzhou Huafeng Logistics Co., Ltd., with the license plate number "Zhe HE7390." It was transporting tetrachloroethane for Zhejiang Quzhou Juhua Group Co., Ltd. Tetrachloroethane is known to have anesthetic and inhibitory effects on the central nervous system, potentially causing damage to the liver, kidneys, and heart.
In response to the accident, both Hangzhou and local governments activated emergency environmental protocols. Teams were deployed to install dams at both ends of the affected drainage channels and downstream areas to contain the spill and prevent further pollution. Monitoring efforts continued throughout the day, with officials confirming that the situation remained under control.
According to Hu Wei, head of the Hangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau, the leakage is currently within a manageable range and will not affect the city’s drinking water supply. The department has pledged to maintain close monitoring of the area to ensure the safety of local water sources.
This incident highlights the importance of rapid response and coordination between environmental agencies and local authorities in handling chemical spills. While the event raised concerns, the swift actions taken have helped mitigate potential risks to public health and the environment.
