What are the characteristics of chemical centrifugal pumps?

A chemical pump works by using an impeller to subject the liquid flowing through it to centrifugal force. This process increases the mechanical energy of the liquid, enabling it to be transported efficiently. Essentially, a chemical pump is a device designed to enhance the energy of liquids for various applications. Due to the unique demands of chemical processes, chemical centrifugal pumps differ from standard centrifugal pumps in several key ways: (1) Chemical pumps are designed to meet the specific needs of chemical production. They not only transport liquid materials and provide the necessary pressure but also ensure accurate flow rates and stable head to maintain efficiency and reliability during operations. (2) These pumps often handle liquids at their critical state—liquids that can vaporize when temperature rises or pressure drops. This makes them prone to cavitation, which can damage internal components. To prevent this, chemical pumps must have high cavitation resistance and larger clearances to avoid friction between moving and stationary parts. Additionally, they should be equipped with sealing mechanisms like labyrinth seals to manage gas buildup and prevent dry friction. (3) The media transported by chemical pumps are often corrosive, including raw materials and reaction intermediates. Therefore, selecting appropriate materials is essential to ensure long-term safe and stable operation. (4) Some chemical pumps handle extreme temperatures, either very high or low. For example, they may transport heat transfer fluids or cryogenic liquids such as liquid nitrogen or methane. These pumps require special design and material selection to withstand thermal shocks, expansion, and cold deformation. (5) Because many chemical pumps handle liquids containing solid particles, wear and erosion are common issues. To combat this, pump components are typically made from wear-resistant materials such as manganese steel, ceramics, or titanium. (6) Operational reliability is crucial for chemical pumps. They must run continuously without failure and maintain stable performance throughout their operation. Any malfunction can lead to production downtime, economic loss, or even safety hazards. (7) Leak-proof operation is a top priority, especially since chemical pumps often handle flammable, toxic, or hazardous substances. Technologies such as magnetic couplings, double mechanical seals, and labyrinth seals are used to minimize or eliminate leaks. When leaks occur, the medium should be safely contained or rendered harmless. For vertical chemical pumps handling critical-state liquids, shaft seals made of self-lubricating materials like PTFE or graphite are commonly used. In addition to packing seals, double mechanical seals or labyrinth seals can be implemented. With double mechanical seals, a sealing fluid is placed between the two faces, while labyrinth seals may use an external gas source. If leakage occurs, it should be managed safely, ensuring no harm to the environment or personnel.
