Miners can straighten coal
In the coal mining face of Yuantangjing, located in Chaili Coal Mine under Shandong Energy Zaoji, miners used to work in extremely difficult conditions. The coal seam was only 1.3 meters thick at its lowest point, forcing workers to bend over for hours, using shovels and manual tools to transport coal through long corridors. This labor-intensive method had been in place for over two decades, with miners suffering from back pain and other physical strains due to the harsh working environment.
The mine, originally designed to produce just 210,000 tons annually, relied on a traditional blasting technique known as "shot mining." Workers would drill holes, load them with explosives, and then retreat to safety before detonation. After the blast, they manually shoveled the loosened coal onto conveyor belts. This process was not only inefficient but also dangerous and exhausting.
For years, the idea of fully mechanized mining seemed unattainable. The thin coal seams, combined with complex geological structures, made it difficult to implement large-scale machinery. However, recent advancements in technology and improved operational skills have changed the situation. In March of this year, Yuantangjing conducted its first fully mechanized mining test, achieving impressive results—over 1,721 tons per day and more than 40,000 tons monthly.
The reporter visited the newly upgraded mining face, located over 700 meters from the mine entrance. The working area was narrow, only about 2 meters wide and 1.7 meters high, requiring workers to crouch or bend slightly. Despite the tight space, the operation ran smoothly. A shearer machine, equipped with a 9-meter-long helical head, cut through the coal seam, while hydraulic supports provided stability. Only two workers could move side by side, and taller individuals had to duck to avoid hitting their heads.
The automation significantly reduced the number of workers needed on-site. Instead of manually shoveling coal, miners now simply operated the machines. Dust suppression systems kept the air clean, making the environment much safer and more comfortable. “We no longer need to bend over all day,†said Xue Kaike, a shift supervisor. “The days of using shovels are gone.â€
This transformation has not only improved productivity but also enhanced the quality of life for miners. With fewer people required on the front lines and better safety measures in place, the future of coal mining at Yuantangjing looks brighter than ever.
