Ball valves typically use materials like rubber, nylon, and Teflon for the seat seal, which limits their operating temperature range. The sealing function of a ball valve is achieved when the metal ball is pressed against the plastic seat by the pressure of the medium (in floating ball valves). Under contact pressure, the seat undergoes localized elastic deformation, which helps compensate for manufacturing tolerances and surface roughness, ensuring effective sealing.
Because the seat seal is usually made of plastic, fire resistance and fire safety must be considered in the design and application of ball valves, especially in industries such as petroleum, chemical, and metallurgy, where flammable and explosive media are common. In these environments, it's crucial to prioritize fire protection when using ball valves in pipelines and equipment.
Ball valves are ideal for systems that require two-position control, tight shut-off, resistance to dirt, wear, and erosion, quick opening and closing (1/4 turn), high-pressure cutoff, low noise, and minimal cavitation or vaporization. They are also suitable for applications with small leakage into the atmosphere, low operating torque, and low fluid resistance.

For optimal performance, high-performance butterfly valves, high-performance ball valves, and hard-seated butterfly valves are often recommended depending on the specific requirements of the system.
