Guangzhou's original furniture development is backward, consumers choose weak multicultural awareness

A closer look reveals that these independent original design brands from grassroots are more active in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Chengdu. In Guangzhou, which is located in the national furniture production base and adjacent to Hong Kong and leads the domestic interior design trend, the sound of original furniture is relatively quiet. What made this thought-provoking contrast?

Reason 1: Consumer cultural awareness is relatively weak

Although the e-commerce channel is their almost unique sales method, it should be free from geographical constraints. However, among the proportion of people who buy, the number of consumers in Guangzhou is not only inferior to Beijing, Shanghai, but also to Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and southwestern cities such as Chengdu and Chongqing. What is the cause of this difference? First, the industry generally believes that the concept of the consumer group is a major reason. The consumers in Guangzhou have always been known for their "rationality" and "paying attention to cost-effectiveness". They do not blindly admire the brand and are considered by the industry to be the most difficult market to overcome. The original furniture pays more attention to the concept and cultural connotation conveyed by the furniture. In contrast, the practical function of the furniture is only the most basic level. The “wind and snow” related to the furniture is the value of the soul. This is especially true in the Jiangnan area, where cultural heritage is deep and enjoys life.

Reason 2: Adjacent to the production base, consumers have a lot of choices

Of course, the reason why consumers in Guangzhou will form this consumption habit is also related to Guangzhou's unique geographical location and long-standing furniture tradition. Guangzhou has a long history of furniture generation. “Neighbors” Dongguan, Foshan, Shenzhen, Zhongshan and other places are also famous for furniture production, forming the country's largest Pearl River Delta furniture production base.

The market is fiercely competitive and there are many brands to choose from, which leads to more affordable market prices and more choices for consumers. The appeal of original design is less pronounced than in other cities. What I have to mention is that Guangzhou's home design is deeply influenced by the Hong Kong region, and there is already a mature stereotype of thinking about furniture consumption. After the consumer's thinking is guided by the style, every time the decoration is made, the mind will first determine the favorite home style, such as Jane, Pastoral, American, Chinese, etc., and then choose the furniture according to the style. When the style is determined, the original style of the niche is easily excluded.

If the advantages accumulate more, it may turn into a disadvantage. Long-term immersion in the big atmosphere of traditional furniture production, the market's awareness of the need for original design has not formed, leading to a niche, original design brand that emphasizes individuality is relatively "difficult to produce."

Reason 3: The exhibition's support for originality is far less than that of Shanghai.

Guangzhou, where the exhibition economy is famous throughout the country, has gradually been replaced by Shanghai in the past two years. Home-style exhibitions, which are the strengths of local exhibitions, have to face such embarrassment. Affected by the market, Guangzhou's furniture exhibition in recent years has been tepid. The industry evaluation of the furniture exhibition in March this year is not even as lively as the Dongguan Furniture Fair, causing infinite embarrassment.

In contrast, Shanghai's exhibitions are increasingly valued by domestic and foreign brands and buyers, and the more international stage has become the "mainstream" in the eyes of the industry. Although Guangzhou is closely adjacent to “Ceramic City” Foshan, the sanitary exhibition focusing on ceramics is the Shanghai exhibition, which is more recognized by the industry. Even the two-year furniture fair held in Guangzhou, starting this year, the autumn show in September will also move to Shanghai.

In the interview with reporters, local original brands said that when they participated in the Guangzhou Furniture Fair in March, the organizers did not pay much attention to independent original brands. Not only did they not have preferential incentive policies, but the original brands were also treated as niche categories and were arranged in remote areas. A pavilion with fewer people. Reason 4: The concept of brand operation is relatively backward

Of course, the development of independent and original furniture in Guangzhou is backward, and there are still internal factors of the brand itself.

The original design atmosphere of Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and other cities is relatively strong, relying on the “brand” awareness of the consumers and designers in these cities. Some original brands such as Shanghai and Hangzhou, although starting from scratch, have a strong sense of overall operation. From factory production to brand operation to team management, there is a reasonable and rigorous system. In terms of marketing, it also knows how to package and express the brand's connotation, making it easier for consumers to understand the brand culture and thus more easily accept original designs.

The original brand in Guangzhou has more time allocated to the design itself, and the concept of brand operation is relatively backward. Once a designer-led brand involves operational issues, it must learn from scratch. If the original brands of other big cities are the "three good students" of the comprehensive development of moral, intellectual, and artistic, then the local brands in Guangzhou are more like the "scholars" of partial science. In the future, we must occupy a place in the original furniture market, and we must further cultivate the brand's internal strength.
