Metamaterials can make information "invisible" transmission

The research team of the Superconducting Metamaterials Laboratory at NUST MISIS in Russia has developed a unique metamaterial that is expected to lay the foundation for “invisible” transmission of information.

Metamaterial is an artificial composite material with extraordinary physical properties. Due to its structural heterogeneity, it can change the direction and properties of electromagnetic waves and control the properties of light. For example, by means of them it is possible to hide objects in certain electromagnetic radiation bands. The most important practical application of this material lies in the defense industry or supercomputer field.

The team created a unique flat metamaterial, which is a so-called supramolecular small flat lattice of gratings cut from ordinary steel by a powerful laser. The University’s deputy doctor of information, Alexei Bassarin, said that the special arrangement of lattices created by this method constitutes the sum of electromagnetic torques.

Basharin said: "The most incredible application direction of the electromagnetic torque we have developed is to study the interaction of objects without the help of electromagnetic fields. This is the famous Aharonov-Bohm effect in quantum physics. ."

He said: "Electromagnetic torque does not radiate electromagnetic fields, but it can radiate electromagnetic potential, so that there is a unique possibility of masking various objects. Specifically, they are shielded from the electromagnetic field to create a vector-only modulation and secret This means that we can't see many objects in nature because they don't interact with the electromagnetic field and only interact with the electromagnetic potential."

At present, experts from the Russian National Institute of Research and Technology are trying to verify the possibility of using this new material to “invisiblely” transmit information.
