When inspecting NSK bearings, it's essential to follow the national regulations and standards. Here are the key rules and conditions that should be considered:
(1) **Ambient Temperature Rule**: The temperature during measurement should be maintained at 20°C. All components—NSK bearings, gauge blocks, measuring instruments—must reach thermal equilibrium. Placing them on a metal plate can speed up this process. If not, it may take several hours or even days to balance.
To ensure accuracy, it's recommended to use mechanized measuring tools to avoid direct human contact or wear insulated gloves during operations.
(2) **Measurement Area Rule**: For inner or outer diameter measurements, domestic standards typically measure within the maximum chamfer area on one end of the raceway. In contrast, foreign standards usually measure within twice the chamfer area on both ends of the raceway.
(3) **Scale Benchmark Rule**: Use comparison measurement methods with standard gauge blocks or reference pieces as benchmarks. Gauge blocks must comply with JB/T1078 "Gauge Block" specifications, and the reference pieces must conform to the manufacturer’s authority guidelines.
(4) **Instrument Calibration**: Measuring instruments must be calibrated and have appropriate accuracy and magnification ratios suitable for the NSK bearing being measured.
(5) **Allowable Measurement Error**: The allowable error should generally be less than 10% of the nominal dimension.
(6) **Probe Radius and Measuring Force**: To minimize errors, the probe radius should be large enough, and the measuring force should be reduced. A larger curvature radius on the probe and controlled pressure help achieve more accurate results.
(7) **Mandrel Specifications**: When measuring dimensions like Kia, Kea, and Sd, the mandrel used should have a taper of 1/5000 to 1/10000. The basic taper rule is 1/12 for tapered mandrels.
(8) **Measurement Load Rule**: Apply the necessary load when measuring Kia, Kea, Sia, and Sea. Ensure the rolling elements and raceways are in normal contact to obtain stable readings.
(9) **Reference Plane Rule**: For general bearings, the non-printed face of the raceway is used as the reference surface. For angular contact ball bearings, the end face that receives the thrust load serves as the reference.
When handling NSK bearings, avoid exposing them to contaminants or moisture. If work is paused, cover the machine with oil-proof plastic sheets or similar materials.
For unshielded bearings, do not disassemble them. Instead, gently brush the surface with a soft brush, then dry with a lint-free cloth or compressed air (without causing the bearing to rotate).
Use small mirrors and dental-like probes to examine the raceway, cage, and balls. If no damage is found, refer to the original equipment’s smoothness explanation or page 204 of this book. Page 247 also provides details about smoothness.
