The introduction of Foshan Shunde "Plan" promotes the transformation and upgrading of the entire furniture industry

In the wake of increased environmental regulations, industries such as ceramics, paper, and others have become focal points for governance due to their "three highs and one low" characteristics—high energy consumption, high pollution, high resource usage, and low output. Recently, Shunde in Foshan has rolled out a comprehensive governance plan, with the furniture industry emerging as a key area for remediation. According to the "Three Highs and One Low" Enterprise Adjustment and Implementation Plan issued by Shunde, the first batch of projects includes 9 shutdown and relocation initiatives, targeting sectors like papermaking, textiles, bleaching, and ink production. Additionally, 27 key governance projects have been identified, with 19 of them focusing on furniture manufacturing enterprises. Shunde is recognized as a major hub for China's furniture industry, with Longjiang Town being the country's first furniture manufacturing center and Lecong Town known as the capital of Chinese furniture trade. During a recent meeting, Tan Fengxian, deputy mayor of Longjiang Town, emphasized that the furniture industry in Longjiang and Lecong would be central to industrial adjustment and development under the new plan. The implementation of this plan is expected to significantly influence the future of Shunde's furniture sector. Yang Zhihua, secretary-general of the Lecong Furniture Association, noted that while some small and medium-sized furniture companies may face challenges related to noise and air pollution, the overall impact of these measures is positive. He pointed out that the use of non-environmentally friendly coatings and the illegal discharge of waste oil and wood chips are among the issues that need to be addressed. Wang Ke, president of the Guangdong Furniture Association, highlighted that the plan aims to drive the industry toward transformation and upgrading, with cleaner production becoming an inevitable trend. Tan Fengxian also mentioned that a significant portion of VOC emissions in the furniture industry comes from traditional oil-based paints, and the adoption of water-based paints could serve as a viable solution for most companies. Yang Zhihua added that the furniture industry has faced a downturn over the past two years due to economic slowdowns, real estate regulations, and market oversupply. According to a report released in May 2013 by the Guangdong Furniture Chamber of Commerce and the Guangdong Furniture Industry Research Institute, Guangdong’s furniture production fell by 14.3% in the first five months of the year. While exports showed mixed results, with Germany's demand for solid wood furniture in Guangdong rising, other countries experienced negative growth. In response, Shunde furniture companies are actively seeking to expand into overseas markets and develop domestic demand. For example, several companies have set up large-scale home experience centers in Yiyang, Hunan, and are exploring e-commerce platforms to increase their reach. (Editor: Peterr)
