Cold water flower morphology

Cold water flower morphology characteristics: This perennial herb grows with stolons, featuring fleshy and slender stems that are slightly swollen in the middle. The stems reach a height of 25 to 70 cm and have a thickness of 2 to 4 mm. They are mostly glabrous, but the upper parts may be slightly pubescent, covered densely with lanceolate leaves. The leaves are papery in texture and nearly identical in size, ranging from narrowly ovate to ovate-lanceolate or ovate. They measure between 4 to 11 cm in length and 1.5 to 4.5 cm in width. The leaf tips are either caudate or acuminate, while the base is sessile and wedge-shaped. The lower part of the leaves has shallow serrations that extend toward the apex, rarely showing heavy serrations. The upper surface is dark green and shiny, while the underside is light green with scalloped edges. Each leaf has small, dense, 0.5–0.6 mm long strips along the margins, clearly visible on both sides. There are three main veins, with the lateral ones extending upward and outward. The lateral veins number 8 to 13 pairs and appear slightly oblique. The petiole is slender, reaching up to 17 cm in length, often smooth but sometimes slightly hairy. The large, green, oblong sepals measure 8 to 12 mm and are shed easily.

The flowers are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers occur on separate plants. Male inflorescences are umbellate, measuring 2 to 5 cm in length, with few branches and sparse clusters on the stalks. Female inflorescences are shorter and more compact. Male flowers are either stalked or nearly sessile, about 1 mm in size. They are often pinkish in color, with filigree-like structures and red sepals. The female flowers have a small, conical degenerate pistil. The achenes are small, rounded, and have an oblique apex, measuring approximately 0.8 mm in length. When mature, they turn greenish-brown and feature prominent thorns at the tip. The persistent perianth segments are three in number, deeply sessile, large, and ovate-oblong in shape, with a blunt apex. These segments cover about one-third of the fruit's length. The flowering period occurs from June to September, and the fruits develop from September to November.
