Qiman Zhang: Designed for farmers

In the realm of environmental art design in China, Zhang Qiman has long stood out as a pioneering figure. As the founder of the discipline in the country, she is also a passionate advocate of "designing for China." This time, rather than following the trend of young designers flocking to urban centers, she turned her attention to the cave dwellings in Shaanxi Province, bringing modern design solutions to rural communities living in these traditional homes. "Designing for farmers" emerged from Zhang Qiman's deep sense of responsibility. It was inspired by the emotional impact of witnessing the harsh realities of cave life, a response to the national policy promoting western development, and a reaction against the commercialization that had left many designers feeling disconnected from their true purpose. She once said, "Without serving the farmers, how can we live with a clear conscience?" From 2009 to 2012, Zhang collaborated with faculty and students from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing Institute of Clothing Technology, and Taiyuan University of Technology to launch the "Designing for Farmers" initiative. Over four years, they focused on researching, designing, and transforming cave houses, aiming to improve the living conditions of dozens of families in the region. When asked about the challenges faced during the project, Zhang prefers not to dwell on them. Instead, she emphasizes the real-life improvements she has seen in the quality of life for the farmers. As the new year of 2014 began, she had already mapped out the full-year plan for the project, which aims to expand its reach and offer more sustainable options for rural communities across the years ahead.
