China's nickel, copper, cobalt and platinum group metal research project started in Beijing
The launch ceremony of the project titled "Research on the Development and Sustainable Development Strategy of Nickel, Copper, Cobalt, and Platinum Group Metal Resources in China" took place recently in Beijing. The event brought together leading academicians who emphasized that this initiative aims to conduct comprehensive, strategic, and forward-looking research on these critical metal resources. By analyzing the current status and future trends of nickel, copper, cobalt, and platinum group metals both domestically and globally, the project will provide valuable insights and policy recommendations for the sustainable development of China's non-ferrous metal industry. It is expected to serve as a guiding reference for enterprises seeking long-term growth and resource optimization.
This project marks a significant collaboration between Gansu Province and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Its scope begins with an in-depth analysis of Jinchuan Group’s development and addresses key challenges facing China’s non-ferrous metal sector, including resource depletion, inefficient utilization, technological bottlenecks, environmental pressures, and an imbalance between overproduction of basic materials and a lack of high-value products. Approved in 2013 as a major strategic consulting project, the initiative focuses on deepening resource exploration, advancing clean metallurgy, promoting recycling, and developing high-performance materials. To support this effort, the Chinese Academy of Engineering assembled a team of 21 academicians from diverse fields such as chemical engineering, metallurgy, energy, and environmental science. They are divided into four sub-topics for in-depth research, with the final report scheduled for completion by December 2015.
In his speech, Academician Gan Yong, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, highlighted the project’s potential to drive the transformation and upgrading of traditional metal industries. He stressed the importance of interdepartmental coordination, innovation, and strong leadership to ensure the quality and impact of the research outcomes.
Attendees included renowned academicians such as Qiu Dingfan, Tu Hailing, Tang Zhongli, Sun Chuanqi, Zhang Guocheng, Zhang Wei, Zhou Lian, Zuo Tiezhen, He Jili, Zhang Wenhai, Zhong Di, Cai Meifeng, and Gu Desheng. Representatives from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Gansu Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Central South University, and Jinchuan Group also participated in the event.
