China's nickel, copper, cobalt and platinum group metal research project started in Beijing

The official launch of the research project titled "Research on the Development and Sustainable Development Strategy of Nickel, Copper, Cobalt, and Platinum Group Metal Resources in China" took place recently in Beijing. The participating academicians emphasized that this initiative aims to conduct comprehensive, strategic, and forward-looking studies on nickel, copper, cobalt, and platinum group metals by analyzing their current status and global development trends. This research is expected to provide essential decision-making support for the sustainable development of China's non-ferrous metal resources and offer a clear direction for the future growth of resource-based enterprises across the country. The findings of this project are anticipated to serve as a valuable reference for other companies seeking to improve their resource management strategies. This project marks a significant collaboration between Gansu Province and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It begins with an in-depth analysis of Jinchuan Group, one of China’s leading non-ferrous metal enterprises, and addresses critical challenges facing the long-term stable development of the industry. These include the worsening mineral resource crisis, the need to enhance resource utilization efficiency, the urgent demand for energy-saving technologies, environmental pollution issues, and the imbalance between overcapacity in primary products and the lack of high-end materials. Approved in 2013 as a major strategic consulting project by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the initiative focuses on deepening resource development, advancing clean metallurgy, promoting resource recycling, and developing high-performance advanced materials. To ensure the depth and quality of the research, the Chinese Academy of Engineering assembled a team of 21 academicians from diverse fields such as chemical engineering, metallurgy, energy, and environmental science. They were divided into four sub-topics to carry out detailed investigations. The final research report is scheduled to be completed by December 2015. In his speech, Academician Gan Yong, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, highlighted the project's potential to drive the transformation and upgrading of traditional metal industries. He stressed the importance of inter-departmental cooperation, innovation, and reform in ensuring the success of the project. Several other renowned academicians, including Qiu Dingfan, Tu Hailing, Tang Zhongli, Sun Chuanqi, Zhang Guocheng, and others, attended the event. Representatives from the Gansu Provincial Science and Technology Department, Central South University, and Jinchuan Group also participated in the ceremony.
